South China Sea stability region's priority

Image
The so-called South China Sea arbitration initiated by the Philippines has caused instability and heightened tensions in the region over the past nine years. The Philippines, with the backing of some Western powers such as the United States and the European Union, has been seeking international support to get the ruling implemented, and trying to pressure China into compromising its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights. But China and key neighboring countries have embraced the concept of a maritime community with a shared future, promoting tangible cooperation in areas such as marine economic integration, ecological protection, and fisheries management. The cooperation has significantly contributed to post-arbitration stability in the South China Sea, and, more importantly, helped maintain peace and stability, and promote shared development in the region. The relentless focus on the arbitration of the Philippines and some Western countries is misaligned with regional count...

Ignoring free trade benefits is absurd

Image
A container ship (right) heads toward Antwerp harbor from Norfolk harbor in the United States, on June 20. The global shipping industry is bracing for impact amid new US tariffs. OLIVIER HOSLET/EPA-EFE Around the world, people are waking up to the benefits of freer trade. After years of free trade fatigue and growing protectionism, a majority of Americans now say the United States should pursue global free trade, while the European Union is striking free trade deals as fast as it can, and even regional competitors China, Japan and the Republic of Korea have agreed to deepen greater cooperation in trade. The threat of a global tariff war has driven many to the conclusion that everyone is better off when countries specialize in what they are best at. This rosy view is a stark contrast to the vision of trade as a zero-sum game that other countries have won. And yet, the downsides of free trade are real: Images of the "Rust Belt" of America have come to stand for the negative i...

China's sacrifices should always be remembered

Editor's note:  With global tensions rising and regional conflicts showing no signs of ending, it has become more urgent than ever to understand the root causes of war. Wang Jianlang, president of the Chinese Society for the History of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, reflects on some overlooked aspects of World War II — its real starting point, China's under-recognized contribution, and why the principle of "indivisible peace" remains vital today. Wang also warns against populism and historical amnesia in an in-depth conversation with China Daily's Liu Jianna for Dialogues with Thinkers, China Daily's high-end interview program. Following are excerpts from the interview: Q1: How should the world reflect on World War II amid the ongoing regional conflicts in order to prevent new wars? A: We are witnessing a turbulent era of global change. While we may not yet be on the brink of a third world war, the current global environment is arguably t...

As a result, the maintenance of high-end equipment through innovation has become a major focus for Chinese researchers. A team led by Chen Xuefeng, a professor at the iHarbour Academy of Frontier Equipment based at Xi'an Jiaotong University in Shaanxi province, has developed a biomimetic, snake-shaped robot that is forecast to revolutionize maintenance and repair work. AI-powered virtual idols raise ethical hazards

Image
AI beings like Baidu's digital idol Xi Jiajia (left) and China Daily's virtual journalist Yuanxi (right) are taking online platforms by storm. [Photo provided to China Daily] If you thought livestreaming was strange enough — hosts singing, dancing, chatting for hours to faceless audiences — then welcome to the era of the anime-style AI streaming, for which there is no need for real human beings. These streamers are virtual idols, not just video game characters. Till now, they needed human performers behind the scenes to supply motion, voice, and even that carefully calibrated blush. But with generative AI and voice synthesis evolving at warp speed, they can simply cut the puppeteer's strings. They're being increasingly designed to be fully autonomous: reacting in real-time, mimicking emotions, reading the chat, cracking jokes, all without a human ever stepping in. Anime-style AI streaming is an industry that's booming in China's "guzi economy", the f...
